The M4 shuts both ways between Hayes and Chiswick for four nights from Monday, 10pm to 5.30am. Newyears Green Lane closes 21 to 24 September for water works.

The motorway into London closes for four nights running this week. The M4 is shut in both directions between junction 3 at Hayes and junction 1 at Chiswick from 10pm on Monday 21 September to 5.30am, and again on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. National Highways lists it as maintenance, with the diversion on local authority roads.

Closer to home, Newyears Green Lane closes from Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September for an emergency water connection. It is the only new closure on the council’s borough list this week.

Today, Sunday 20 September, Piccadilly line trains from Uxbridge stop at Acton Town. There is no service on to central London all day. Next weekend the Uxbridge branch itself shuts.

Check today’s closures first

Hillingdon Council approves every set of roadworks in the borough and publishes a notice for each closure on its roadworks page. That page also links the live one.network map, which shows everything dug up right now: council, utility and emergency works alike.

For the motorways, National Highways’ road closure report lists every full closure on the M25, M40 and M4 for the coming seven days. Those two sources will always beat a static page for today’s picture, including this one.

Closed on borough roads

From the council’s published closure notices, checked on 20 September 2026:

  • Newyears Green Lane, UB9: closed Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, emergency works for a water connection. The lane runs through Newyears Green, in the countryside between Harefield and Ickenham.
  • Golden Crescent, Hayes: closed to Wednesday 23 September (JSM)
  • Abbotsbury Gardens, Pinner: closed Monday 21 September to Sunday 4 October (Cadent Gas)
  • Hurstfield Crescent, Hayes: closed Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September (Affinity Water)
  • Eton Road, Hayes: closed Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September (BT)
  • The Close, Pinner: closed Tuesday 29 September to Thursday 1 October (Affinity Water)
  • Sweetcroft Lane, Uxbridge: closed Monday 12 to Tuesday 13 October (Affinity Water)
  • Walford Road, Uxbridge: closed Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 October (Affinity Water)
  • Long Drive, Ruislip: closed Monday 26 to Friday 30 October (Network Rail)

Newyears Green Lane is the one change since last week. Nothing else has come off the list or been added, and the two Pinner closures sit on the Hillingdon side of the boundary with Harrow, because the council only authorises closures on its own roads.

Behind the one-off digs, the council’s borough-wide carriageway resurfacing programme runs from 20 July to 20 January 2028 and is listed in two phases, PH1 and PH2, both under “various roads”. Short-notice evening and weekend resurfacing closures will therefore keep appearing on the notices page. Separately, Harvil Road is being realigned for HS2, which the council tracks on its HS2 page.

What it means for you: no through route in the borough is affected this month. The first Uxbridge streets on the list are Sweetcroft Lane and Walford Road, both in mid October. Anyone using Newyears Green Lane to cut between Harefield and Ickenham needs another way round from Monday.

Motorways: the nights to avoid

National Highways’ closure report for 18 to 24 September, last updated at 3.30pm on 18 September, carries these closures near Uxbridge. All are overnight.

The M4 into London, four nights:

  • Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 10pm to 5.30am: the M4 is closed both ways between junction 3 and junction 1, Hayes to Chiswick, for maintenance. Diversion via local authority roads.

At Denham, M40 junction 1A and the M25 at junction 16:

  • Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 10pm to 5.30am: the link from the M40 westbound at J1A to the M25 at J16 closed to both directions of the M25, plus a slip road, for safety fence repairs.

Around Heathrow, M25 junction 15:

  • Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 10pm to 5.30am: the M25 anti-clockwise exit slip and link from J15 to the M4 at J4B closed, for resurfacing.

On the M40 west of Denham:

  • Tuesday 22 September, 10.15pm to 6am: M40 southbound closed J4 to J2, High Wycombe to Beaconsfield, for maintenance.
  • Wednesday 23 September, 10.15pm to midnight: M40 southbound closed J4 to J3, with the J4 entry slip road.
  • Wednesday 23 September, 10.15pm to 6am: M40 northbound closed J2 to J3, Beaconsfield to High Wycombe.

North of Denham, towards Watford:

  • Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 10pm to 5.30am: M25 clockwise closed J17 to J18, Maple Cross to Chorleywood, with a slip road, for electrical works.

The M40 southbound exit at junction 1, closed on the night of Friday 18 September, has reopened. Nothing on the M25, M40 or M4 near Uxbridge is closed tonight, Sunday 20 September.

What it means for you: the M4 is the one to plan around. For four nights from Monday, a late run into west London or out to Heathrow from the Chiswick end is off, and the signed diversion uses ordinary borough roads. The A40 is the sensible alternative, and it has no works on it in Hillingdon. From Tuesday to Thursday, joining the M25 from the M40 at Denham also means a detour.

Tube and rail

Piccadilly line trains from Uxbridge stop at Acton Town today. Transport for London lists no service between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town all day on Sunday 20 September, including the Night Tube, with replacement buses. TfL’s advice for Heathrow is to use the Elizabeth line from central London.

Next weekend the Uxbridge branch itself closes. TfL lists no Piccadilly service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge from 02:00 on Saturday 26 September and all day Sunday 27 September, including the Friday and Saturday Night Tube. Trains keep running between Acton Town and Heathrow. TfL’s advice is:

  • Metropolitan line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge
  • District line between central London and Acton Town or Ealing Common
  • Elizabeth line between central London and Heathrow
  • replacement buses

The Metropolitan line has no planned closures listed by TfL to 5 October. For central London on either weekend, the Metropolitan from Uxbridge to Baker Street is the straightforward option (TfL line status). Times and fares are in our Uxbridge to London guide.

The Elizabeth line is cut back on Sunday 27 September as well, and the early closure that dropped out of TfL’s feed last week is back in it. West Drayton and Hayes & Harlington are the borough’s Elizabeth line stations. TfL now lists:

  • no service between West Drayton and Maidenhead from 01:20 to 08:00, with replacement bus W1 between Hayes & Harlington and Slough via Langley, not serving Iver, and W3 between Slough and Maidenhead via Burnham and Taplow
  • from 08:00, two trains an hour at West Drayton, Heathrow Terminal 4, Langley, Slough, Burnham and Maidenhead
  • four an hour at Acton Main Line, West Ealing, Hanwell and Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3
  • six an hour at Hayes & Harlington, Ealing Broadway and Southall

What it means for you: 27 September is a bad day for rail out of the borough. The Piccadilly is shut, and West Drayton has no trains at all before 8am and two an hour after it. Hayes & Harlington keeps six an hour, and the Metropolitan line from Uxbridge is unaffected.

On the A40 into London

Transport for London’s live register lists no current works on the Hillingdon stretch of the A40. The only entry anywhere on the corridor is in Westminster, where the Westway is down to two lanes westbound between the A5 Edgware Road and the Northern Roundabout for infrastructure inspection, listed to 5 December.

The nearest works to the borough are on roads with misleading names, and both are in Ealing:

  • A4020 Uxbridge Road at Shirley Gardens, W7: temporary signals both ways for emergency Cadent Gas works, to 23 September.
  • A4020 Uxbridge Road at Park Avenue, Southall: westbound lane restrictions for utility works, to 3 October.
  • B455 Ruislip Road, UB5: temporary signals between Old Ruislip Road and Ferrymead Road for electrical cable replacement, to 18 December. Despite the name, this is in Northolt, in the borough of Ealing.

The A4020 runs for miles under the name Uxbridge Road, through Southall, Hanwell and Ealing. None of these is in Uxbridge or Ruislip (TfL road disruptions).

The key routes, for orientation

Uxbridge sits in the angle between the M25, the M40/A40 and the A4020, with the M25's J15 and J16 both within a few minutes of town. Graphic by Uxbridge News.

The geography explains the traffic. The M40 begins at junction 1, the Denham roundabout, just across the county line, where it meets the A40, A412 and A4020. Half a mile on, junction 1A is the M25 at its junction 16 (M40 junction layout).

Eastbound, the A40 Western Avenue is a Transport for London road corridor, live status here. It passes north of the town at Swakeleys and Hillingdon Circus. Everything else, including the A4020 through the town centre, is Hillingdon’s, and is notified on the council roadworks page.

What a day’s parking actually costs

The big town-centre option is The Chimes shopping centre car park: over 1,550 spaces, cash-free with number-plate recognition. Level 1 is open around the clock and levels 2 to 6 run 6am to 1am.

Current tariffs, Monday to Saturday: 2 hours £2.60, 3 hours £3.65, 4 hours £4.70, 5 hours £5.70, 6 hours £6.75, 8 hours £9.35, 10 hours £11.95, 24 hours £26. Evenings, arriving after 6pm and leaving by 1am, cost £2.10. Sundays are £3.00 for up to 5 hours, then the weekday rates above that. Blue Badge holders get up to 6 hours free, with standard rates after that (The Chimes parking, rechecked 20 September 2026).

On-street, town-centre pay and display runs 80p per 15 minutes for Hillingdon residents and £1.40 per 15 minutes for everyone else, with a 2-hour maximum stay. It is generally enforced 8am to 6:30pm Monday to Saturday, and is free outside those hours, on Sundays and on bank holidays (Hillingdon street parking charges).

What it means for you: The Chimes beats the street at almost any duration. Two hours costs £2.60 there against £11.20 at the non-resident street rate, and the street’s two-hour cap rules out a working day anyway.

Buses, and the station

Uxbridge station is the hub. Routes 222, 331, 427, A10, U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U7, U9 and U10 all serve it. Three are worth knowing even if you never ride the rest:

  • A10: direct to Heathrow Central bus station (TfL)
  • Superloop SL8: the Uxbridge Road corridor to Ealing and White City (TfL)
  • U1: Ruislip, Uxbridge High Street and West Drayton station (TfL), the easy way to reach the Elizabeth line

Heathrow, the long-term one

The biggest roadworks story in Hillingdon’s future is not scheduled yet. Heathrow’s third-runway proposals include diverting the M25 into a new tunnel built 130 metres west of the current motorway, with new link roads separating through-traffic from M4 movements. What roadworks are happening in Uxbridge right now?

Nothing in Uxbridge itself is on the council’s list until Sweetcroft Lane on 12 October. Elsewhere in the borough, Newyears Green Lane is closed from 21 to 24 September and Golden Crescent in Hayes to 23 September. The council’s roadworks page carries the live list.

Is the M4 closed this week?

Is the M40 closed near Uxbridge?
